  Didn't do it for me either. The article states that JW's aren't real Christians because they don't believe the usual absurd orthodox dogmas spouted by mainstream christianity. Yawn.

  okay so we know the scriptures say alot about "love of money" "greed" and so on...but not one verse says "thou shalt not gamble thy money.

  " so if it's about greed and the love of money i know many brothers who work 60 hours a week making big bucks even though they live comfortably.

  $$$$ if a brother has a bet now and then why is this a disfellowshiping "greedy" sin.

  No one has commented on your other point, ie, that those who work extra hard for $$$$, specially overtime, when they are already living comfortably, should be disfellowshipped. Hehe..I never thought of that before. I know many brothers like this!

  the article is not yet in print, however on jw.org you will find the audio recording for the february 15, 2009 study edition.. this article sums up some of the talks given over the past year or so.

  it makes clear that we should trust the faithful and discreet slave because jehovah and jesus trust the "slave".

  the slave has been faithfully providing spiritual food for 130 years.

  A scarily true parallel made by Jeremy C in his post, worth repeating:

  The Governing Body reminds me of the old Soviet leaders who utilized the state run news service to dispense their "information". As Russians stood in line for hours just to get bread and toilet paper, the state run news service would brag at the robust economy. As massive crop failures resulted in large scale starvation, the old guard rulers declared successful and abundant crop seasons.

  Those who defected were villified as those who hated their fellow Russians, and enemies of Mother Russia. Mother Russia - mother organization. Loyalty to the Party - loyalty to the Slave Class. Western decadence - worldy wisdom. See any similarities?

  The Watchtower has long denounced religious repression in totalitarian states. But, as the old saying goes: if the shoe fits; wear it.

  Are the gospels just midrash?

  some responses to this common claim gleaned from internet sources;.

  the idea the gospels are simply midrash has several problems associated with it.

  one is that the genre as such did not exist yet in judaism as the midrashim are a few centuries later.

  Thanks Leolaia. Much food for thought there and great points. I'll try and get some sort of decent response cobbled together before too long (with my limited resources and reading on the subject). I appreciate you wish to conclude on the subject though but I hope not :-).

  I will just say at this juncture that while you make some very valid points about the failings of eyewitness testimony and memory, its important to take into account the latest research on ancient orality and group memory. British heavyweight James D G Dunn strongly argues in favour of the latest model, which NT Scholar R T France sums up here: "...the phenomena of informal tradition in a Middle Eastern peasant culture /20/. Here, while the formal controls of rabbinic tradition are lacking, and in some types of oral material a considerable degree of latitude may be allowed in the telling of a story, the main structure and key phrases, sayings, etc. are fixed by community memory to the extent that however often a story may be told in different circles with varying detail or coloring, it will still remain in all essentials the same story, with the same punchline etc., as when it started. Other material in such a culture will have a more unvarying form, where the exact words matter, as in proverbs or poems. This mixture, it is suggested, is closer to the phenomena of the gospels than either of the previously considered approaches, and encourages a strong confidence in the essential reliability of the gospels while allowing for a considerable variation in detail which gives full play to the individual personality and views of each gospel writer."http://www.leaderu.com/truth/1truth21.html

  This research has arguably rendered the old Bultmann school of form criticism, which alleged the gospels had more to do with the writers literacy skills and theological agenda than anything else, and which has dominated 20th century scholarship, for all intents and purposes obsolete.

  these are two things i took to the c.o.

  as a teenager.. i have always been inquizitive and the co agreed with me on both counts.

  now i have recently left, it tells me how much a free for all the society leave the interpretation of the bible.. my first point was "jehovah must have invented the sword.....why ?".

  Farkel, I never said looking into the Watchtower's history was a waste of time. Far from it. I was basically pointing out that having conference calls advertising this kind of historical, narrow, esoteric stuff about Mrs Russell isn't gonna convince a single dub to ever leave.

  I can't believe you've resorted to personally attacking me in a new thread just because I insulted you in another thread after you first insulted my sceen name. How pathetic. No wonder Simon is closing this site down.
